School will soon be starting and now is the time to be researching student loans and grants. While the Obama student loans bill passed earlier this year, will it change anything for 2010? I have tried to find information about specific changes and it is very hard to find anything current for 2010. The best place to go is here at this government direct loans site.

With the new bill, the banks have been cut out of the loan process and all student loans will be given direct loans by the government. The way it used to be was that all students would get their loans from private banks. These banks would handle all the maintenance for the loans and be subsidised by the US government. Regardless of whether you think this would be a good or bad thing, one has to wonder how this change in Senate seats numbers will affect what he chooses to move forward with and what he chooses to abandon.

The Massachusetts election has shown first hand how people are upset with how things are going in this country. Some people think Obama is doing too much and others think he is doing too little. Many voted for him to end the war and to put money in people’s hands and get them back to work. None of those things have happened and so they are angry. Other people voted for him to push through health care, gay marriages, and other such things which haven’t happened yet either.

Obama made it sound during the election that he was going to help the poor and the people who needed help but unemployment is now around 10% which is very high. Why then, is there so much hype about this and how have women come to believe there is special school grant money set aside just for them? It turns out that President Obama did make a speech a while back where he emphasised the importance of moms going back to school. It was all part of his push to encourage students to study hard and do their best. In that speech he said many things and among them were encouraging words to women to return to school and complete their education. All presidents make speeches like this to appear as though they are pro education and to get good publicity.

Somewhere along the way, that speech Obama gave about moms returning to school has gotten twisted around to read that there are new Obama back to school grants for moms. Perhaps this has been perpetrated by advertisers or it has just happened because so many women want it to be true. Either way, we now have many moms and women going online searching for something that they have been lead to believe exists but doesn’t.  

This does not mean that there is nothing out there if you want to get money to return to school. It just means that there is no specific Obama school grants program that is new. What is available are the usual Pell Grants and the amount these grants give has been raised. Pell grants though, are rarely enough to pay the full price of tuition that colleges charge nowadays.

There are other grants and school loans that women, men, moms, and dads can apply for and many of them have gone up to match inflation. Going back to school is always a good idea if you can find a way to afford the tuition so you shouldn’t be discouraged from trying. Unfortunately though, there is no new grants for moms returning to school from Obama like you might have thought there was.

President Obama’s Moms Return To School grants may be hard to get if you can find out where to apply. A search of the Internet did not reveal much information about them. One thing to note is that the Obama stimulus grants are all going to big companies, local governments, and state projects so there is little to no extra government money for education grants, school grants, or college grants.

Obama student loans are still up in the air as the legislation he is proposing to make all student loans go through the government is still on hold. This is not one of the bills that is on the front burner so it may be awhile before anything is resolved in that area. A vote on the new Obama money for college proposal will not happen until this fall. Right now Obama health care is front and center as is the economy.

Back to school stimulus grants would be great especially because the cost of school and college is so expensive now. With jobs being lost and people needing to be retrained, they need to learn new skills. Going back to school to learn a new career is great if you can afford to do it but many can’t. Obama government grants are great for the big corporations but unfortunately there is just not enough financial aid to go around for the little guy.

The Obama stimulus bill that was passed earlier in the year had about $5 billion in new funds earmarked for things like Head Start. Additionally it had about $41 billion in grants to local schools. The problem is that these Obama school grants are not things you can just go out and get. They are all divided up between the schools and in order to get them, the schools have to show a certain level of competency and achievement.

This means that someone hoping to go to go back to school or college on a new Obama school grant might not be able to get one like they hoped they would. Just like everything that comes from the government, these school grants are wrapped in layers of regulations and conditions which make them very difficult to understand. When was the last time you understood anything that came from a politician? Just renewing a driver’s license these days can be major pain.

Back to the Obama school grants from the stimulus bill: Some states may not even qualify for this school grant money because of the way they keep data. Understanding exactly all the hoops you have to jump through might be difficult though.

Having the schools and states compete for this stimulus school grants money is a good thought but like anything the government does, do we really trust the outcome? For the single mom or dad that just wants some help with some back to school grants, it all doesn’t mean anything. People who want grant assistance for their education should be able to apply for something concrete and understand why they do or do not qualify. It seems whether you qualify for the new Obama school grants or any other kind of financial aid may depend a lot on where you live and how well your state’s schools are doing.

Going to college has become problematic for many as they have to find a way to pay for it and it seems the price keeps going up. Many students can’t afford to go to college and many others end up graduating with a heap of debt before they ever get their first job. Everyone agrees that the high price of college is a bad thing and it is a problem but what do we do about it? How can we make it affordable so that more students can afford to go without ending up in debt up to their eyeballs?

President Obama thinks the government is the answer to that problem as well as to any and all problems. If you buy into his stated belief that the government can be more efficient in creating lower interest loans than companies in the private sector, you have to take your thinking a step further. What he is really proposing is that the United States government become responsible for deciding who goes to college. Back to school grants and everything else related to student loans will be decided by someone in Washington.

The free market doesn’t always work perfectly but it is the best thing we have and it has worked to keep America the strongest and richest country in the world for over 230 years. What he is proposing with his Obama student government loans plan is that the government is better suited to give out loans than the free market and capitalism.

If his government student loans plan goes through, politicians, bureaucrats and state agencies will be the ones deciding who and who it gives loans to. What this means is that THE GOVERNMENT WILL BE DECIDING WHO GETS TO GO TO COLLEGE! Is that what you want? Do you love and trust the government that much? If your child gets turned down for a student loan you will have no where else to turn. Bureaucrats will be deciding which minorities get in and which ones don’t. It is a total take over and another piece closer to a slave state run by the government.

Now that Barack Obama is President and he has been in office 100 days, what has he done for students and all the young people that voted for him? Has he given us any Obama grants? How about any back to school grants? The big question with Obama student loans is whether companies and the government should be allowed to profit from them or whether we should lend money to students at a very low rate and give them the opportunity to get a reasonably priced education. After all, the youth of America are our future and shouldn’t we do everything we can to see that they get educated?

The student loan battle seems to be one that is being waged between private lenders and the government. President Obama has a student loan plan that will end private student lending  and make them all go through the federal government. This is no different that anything else he is doing which is to try to get the goverment to take over something that has been in private industry. But is he right this time?

Some of the student loans from private lenders like Sallie Mae have been at higher rates than the federal government could offer. These private companies make a profit and that is one of the possible problems with having private lenders be allowed to offer student loans. They also agressively try to collect on these loans which puts tremendous pressure on our college age kids who, through no fault of their own, might have trouble repaying them because of the economy.

Under Obama student grants, there would be no private loans where they could charge the students whatever rate they wanted. The loans would all be at a lower rate regulated by the US government. Many people will reject this proposal by saying that the government never does anything better than the private sector. Usually they are right but this might be one of the times when they are wrong. If we want our youth to be able to afford an education, which obviously benefits all of us, we need to figure out how to make college more affordable. Lowering the interest rates through Obama student loans would be one way of doing that.
