OBAMA’S COLLEGE RANKING PLAN TO MAKE COLLEGE MORE AFFORDABLE

You have to live under a rock to NOT know that tuition at almost every college is through the roof. Today’s graduates routinely end up with tens of thousands of dollars of debt, often for degrees in fields that they can’t even find a job.

Right now, colleges cost what they cost, take it or leave it. If you want to go to Harvard it costs X amount of dollars and every college has its price. You may or may be able to get a scholarship of some kind to help and/or you might be able to get a Pell grant or some other financial assistance. Regardless, you just have to pay the price and hope that the name college you go to will be worth it.

The Obama College Rating System

President Obama has a plan to rate colleges in several ways so that prospective students can understand what they are paying for and try to figure out where to get the best value. Its an affordability – value ranking system that will help break down each college’s pluses and minuses so that students can better determine which school is right for them.

This plan may not be popular with the colleges themselves because the federal dollars they get could be determined or partly determined by their rank. Colleges like the way things are going right now where they can charge what they want, are not compared to other colleges, and don’t have to worry about whether they will still get grants from the government.

Students Should Be More Accountable

Another part of the Obama education plan is to see that students follow up and complete their classes if they want to keep getting grant money. Rather than giving students one big grant, the new plan would only keep the money coming as long as students finish classes and continue to move forward in getting their degree.

Going to college is an important process that trains and educates the children of tomorrow. Not only is it important to make higher education more affordable and accessible, it is also imperative that incentives be put in to raise the graduation rates. Obama’s more affordable plan hopes to get this started and make both colleges and students accountable.
